Your Words Are Powerful | Choose Them WiselyThis post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for more details.
Our words are powerful! As you’ll see, we have the power to tear someone down or lift them up. And we both know that once the damage of tearing someone down with our words has been done there’s no turning back. They can forgive but they’ll never be able to forget.
Choosing our words wisely can be very hard. Sometimes we get caught up in life’s situations and blurt them out. But what would life be like if we thought before we spoke?
The Power of Tearing Someone Down
“I feel like anything I do for my mom isn’t good enough.”
As I read the words a student had texted me my heart broke for her. Her mom had yelled at her because her GPA had gone down .02 points. Not 2 points but .02 points.
From what I understood, her mom was constantly yelling at her and mostly over tiny things. While I’m aware that there are always two sides of the story, I have no doubt that this mom had a lot more going on in her life than just worrying about her daughter’s GPA.
This young lady will walk into adulthood remembering her mother’s words. Are the words we’re speaking to our children the ones we want them to remember?
The Power of an Encouraging Word
As I pulled into the drive-through at the bank I was having a blah kind of day and I had no idea that was about to change. The sweet teller at the window told me how she was always happy to see my smile come through her line.
She had no idea how much I needed to hear those words that particular day – and probably never will.
Take the time to compliment someone. Tell them how pretty they look or how awesome of a friend they are to you. It just might change the course of their day!
The Power of a Text
Many times our friends go through life altering situations and we feel helpless for them. We desperately wish there was something we could do. But maybe there is something you can do. We can use our words to encourage others.
A few years ago my friend’s boyfriend unexpectedly died.
We all know what it feels like to lose someone we love. Months later you feel like no one cares and you’re walking down this journey alone. It’s easy to just say, “I’ll pray for you.”
I decided to step it up a notch and in addition to praying for her texted her verses every couple weeks. It didn’t take much effort and was a very simple thing to do. Later on both she and her mom told me how much that simple act of kindness meant.
Yes, even texting is using our words. We have the power to lift up or tear down with our texts.
The Power of a Hand-Written Note
I had been putting off writing a note that the Lord had asked me to send to a friend. (Please tell me I’m not the only person who procrastinates on projects!) When I finally got around to writing the note it certainly felt good putting it in the mailbox.
My heart was full a few weeks later when the recipient called me to thank me for the note and told me that I’ll never know how much it meant to her.
Who can you encourage with a hand-written note today? It doesn’t have to be long and could even be a simple note in a lunchbox.
Isn’t it amazing how much of an impact our words can make on another life?
Do you need to write a note to someone? What about your friend that’s going through a tough time, do you need to text her and let her know that you’re praying for her? Or, are you a stressed-out parent that needs to apologize to your child?
If you’re unsure what next step you need to take, ask God to show you. I have no doubt that when you seek Him He’ll show you what you need to do.
Or perhaps, like me, you’ve been putting it off. Don’t put it off a moment longer – get to work spreading positive words and sharing God’s love!
