I want to show you how to naturally share your testimony with others. I promise it’s not as hard as you think. Need a testimony example? I’m sharing mine plus a simple outline you can follow to give you the confidence you need as you begin sharing your story.

Have you had a stirring in your heart to share your testimony with those around you and you want to learn how?

Friend, I’m so proud of you for listening to the Holy Spirit’s prompting and taking the steps to learn how to share your testimony.

Sharing your testimony (or story) isn’t as hard as you think. Let me show you how!

What does sharing your testimony as a Christian mean?

Each of us has a unique story of what the Lord has done in our life and how He drew us to Him.

Sharing your testimony is simply telling others what the Lord has done for you!

This doesn’t mean you walk up to a stranger in the grocery store parking lot, wave a Bible in their face and preach at them. I personally don’t think this method of sharing your testimony would be effective at all because I wouldn’t be receptive to someone doing this to me.

Instead it’s sitting down with a friend over coffee and when the time is right lovingly sharing with them what the Lord has done for you and how He has changed you! (Yes, it’s that simple.)

Does God want me to share my testimony?

“God will use His story, through your story, to advance the Gospel.”

As I sat in church these words from the pastor resonated in my heart. He didn’t stop there but went on to say, “God works in us before He can work through us. We can’t have one without the other.”

So the short answer is yes, God wants you to share your testimony.

But in order for us to have the longer answer we need to take a look at Jesus’ last words here on Earth.

Matthew 28:18-20 says, “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.‘”

The word go in that verse isn’t a suggestion, it’s a command. (Let that sink in for a minute!)

If you’re a Christ-follower, He not only wants you to share your testimony but commands you to.

I know that sounds harsh but if He’s done great things in your life don’t you want that for your friends and family too?

The following question pierced through my heart and stepped on my toes. Why are we so willing to share our favorite restaurant or piece of clothing with others but not our testimony and how the Lord has changed us?

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” – 1 Peter 3:15

“ ‘Return home and tell how much God has done for you.’ So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.” – Luke 8:39

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” – Romans 10:14

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

How to simply share your testimony as a Christian.

I’ve learned that the key to sharing your testimony is not to overthink it.

When the Holy Spirit prompts your heart so share with someone say a quick prayer (in your heart) that the Lord will speak through you and then boldly begin sharing knowing that He will.

Here are three questions you can answer as you’re talking with friends and family and sharing what the Lord has done in your life. (I’m sharing my testimony below as an example for you.)

1. What was your life like before Christ?

How did you come to know about Jesus and what He’s done for you?

Was something missing in your life? What was it?

Had you been trying to do things your way that just didn’t seem to be working? What were they?

2. How did you come to Christ?

What circumstances brought you to the realization that you needed Christ in your life?

Briefly share the gospel and how you trusted Christ. (The bridge example is my favorite way to share the gospel.)

3. What has your life been like now that you’ve come to Christ?

What has changed since you put your faith in Christ?

How has He met your needs (both spiritually and emotionally)?

My Testimony Example

Before Christ

Growing up in a Christian home where we went to church every Sunday I knew about Jesus and what He’d done for me at an early age.

How I came to Christ.

I would tell people that I was saved when I was 5 years old but as I became a tween I realized that I couldn’t actually remember praying to ask the Lord into my heart.

I came to this realization one day when I was taking a bath and it was at that moment when I knew I had to make things right with Him. I knew I was a sinner and there was nothing I could do to earn my salvation. Jesus had already given His life on the cross for me and all I had to do was accept His free gift. So I prayed and asked Him to become the Lord of my life.

My life after coming to Christ.

It wasn’t until I was in my early twenties until my relationship with Christ became stronger.

When my husband left me for another woman I knew I had a choice to make. I could either run from God during this terrible time or run to Him.

Running to Him was the best decision I could have made. He showed His faithfulness in countless ways by being a great comforter to me, never leaving me when I felt alone, sending great friends that walked the rough journey with me, and providing for my every need and so much more!

This dark road reminded me that I could trust Him with everything in my life and now it’s my life’s calling to share this hope with others.

As you begin to open up yourself and are willing to share what God has done in your life, He will use you! And when you don’t think you have the words to say, He’ll give them to you! (I know it sounds strange but He’s done it for me many times!)

Does my testimony really matter?

When I was younger I would compare my testimony to others around me and think that it was insignificant because I wasn’t living a “horrible life” before I came to know Jesus…people couldn’t see a radical before and after change in my life.

But over the years I’ve learned that’s not true at all.

My story matters, and yours does too!

Every part of your story matters! No matter how insignificant you may think your story is, God can use it to point someone to Him.

Why does it matter? Because you have a specific sphere of influence around you. You’ll be able to share with people that I would never be able to connect with.

Free yourself up knowing that your testimony isn’t about you but about what Christ has done in your life. When you focus on that it will make a big difference as you’re sharing your testimony.

God wants to use you and your testimony if you’ll only be willing to take that first step and be bold with your faith!
