We live in a Pinterest world that’s filled with perfect pictures of recipes, crafts and DIY projects. At first I hesitated sharing my Turkey Bread with you because, as you can see, it’s not perfect. Depending on how you look at it, it’s a cross between a turkey and a dinosaur (in the face).
My Turkey Bread may not be perfect like the Turkey Dinner Rolls I drew inspiration from, but I decided to share it anyways because it’s really fun to make and your family might just have a blast creating your very own Turkey Bread.
This was actually my third attempt at this creation. I bombed on the first one, but the second one turned out fabulous (I need to share the crazy story on that one with you at some point). I guess the third time isn’t always the charm!
With my Turkey Bread I decided to go a different route and use store bought dough. It worked very well and I might just forgo making my own bread for my next creation!
To make the Turkey’s body, cut the dough in half. Place it on your lightly greased cookie sheet and press into a round shape.
The round shape is key in making it look as Turkey-ish as possible.
Cut off 2/3s of the remaining dough to make the tail. You’ll want to make a half-moon shape (mine didn’t quite get there).
Cut 6 slits in the tail to create the feathers.
Use the remaining dough to create the face and neck. You can do this by rolling the dough in your hands. The neck portion needs to be thicker than the face.
(You’ll likely be stretching, pulling and forming your dough into a Turkey shape until you put it in the oven. I did. Just have fun with it even though it may not be perfect!)
Cut a slit in the face to form the wattle.
Lightly brush the entire Turkey with a whisked egg.
Add a peppercorn for the eye, slivered almonds for the beak and tail and chopped pecans for the body.
Bake according to the dough’s package direction, but keep an eye on it and check it 5-7 minutes before your timer goes off so you don’t burn it!
Whether or not your bread comes out of the oven looking like a Turkey, I bet it’ll still put smiles on your friends and families faces when they see it. And if you’re making it with your kiddos, I have no doubt that they’ll have a blast creating it with you!
