Do you want to learn how to worry less? As a Christian it’s super important to learn how to combat fear and worry and these 8 worry stoppers will help you do just that when the “what ifs” begin to fill your mind.

Learn How To Worry Less As A Christian

These 8 worry stoppers were adapted from Max Lucado’s devotional Live Loved. (Which by the way, is an excellent devotional.)

As you’re reading through this list I want you to notice that the first letter of each point spells out the word PEACEFUL…how cool is that?!

1. Pray first.

I know it sounds cliche but praying first is the best thing you can do when worries cloud your mind.

Romans 12:12 tells us to “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” 

Your mind can’t be filled with both positive and negative thoughts. When you pray that helps keep your mind focused on the promises of God.

Ask others to pray with you. 

Esther is one of the most courageous women of the Bible. She knew the power of prayer. She asked the Jews from her hometown to fast and pray for her before she went to see the King. (Read more about her story here.)

Many times we are too scared to ask people to pray for us because we don’t think they have the time, we feel like our requests may seem petty to them or a plethora of other excuses. 

God has placed people around you to support you. Don’t steal a blessing from a friend or family member by not asking them to pray with you!

2. Evaluate the worry.

A few months ago my pastor recommended that when we’re scared or worried about a situation that we need to process through the situation and see what it will look like if the worst case scenario happens.

If “this” happens what will happen after that…then what will the end result be?

Will the end result really be as bad as you thought. My pastor reminded us that it’s highly likely that the situation won’t turn out as bad as we’re fearing or anticipating.

I know, it sounds weird, but it really does work!

Whatever you’re scared or worrying about process through to the end.

Trust God through your worry.

Recently as I was processing through that end case scenario in my own situation the Holy Spirit nudged my heart and said, “Trust me.”

Those two little words were a beautiful reminder from the Lord that if I start doing the work on myself and my worries that He’s going to be faithful and show up too.

Whether it takes minutes or weeks, days or months I’m confident that healing is on the other side of you processing through your worry. Freedom will come!

3. Act on it.

Max Lucado says to become a worry slapper and treat worries like mosquitos. Instead of dwelling on your fears deal with them.

Change your negative thoughts to positive ones and fill your mind with scripture or music. 

Don’t let your worry get the best of you.  Stop it dead in its track!

4. Compile a worry list. 

What is it that stops you dead in your tracks?

Take the time to write down your fearful thoughts.

After about a week of writing down your worries take a look at your list and see how many of them turned into a reality. 

5. Expect God to show up big!

The Lord will give you the strength you need to face life’s crazy situations and curveballs and I promise that He’ll be right there with you walking through them.

One of my favorite verses that has helped and comforted me through some tough times is Isaiah 41:13, “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

When I walked through the pain of my divorce in my early twenties I didn’t know what would happen with my life. But now, years later, I can look back and see how God showed up big.

It might be years until it’s revealed to you but you can expect God to show up big in your life and circumstance too.

Perhaps you’ll be like me and when you look back over your situation you’ll know that the only way you made it through was with the Lord’s strength. 

Pray believing for big things!

6. Focus on today. 

Stop worrying about tomorrow or next month’s problems.

Focus on things one day at a time knowing that God meets daily needs daily.

He will give you exactly what you need when it’s needed. 

7. Unleash a worry army. 

Whenever you’re worried or scared text or call a loved one and share your feelings with them. Not just anyone but a trusted friend or loved one you know will shoot you straight.

Ask if your worries are normal or if they’re unhealthy.

Why is this so important?

Because Satan wants you to keep your feelings inside and in the darkness.

He knows that when they’re shown to the light healing will begin, true freedom will come, and the situation will become brighter. But when you keep them in the darkness of your heart it’s unhealthy and they begin to fester and can even grow into anxiety.

8. Let God be enough. 

When your hands are clinging tightly to the things of this world you’re not able to hold onto the things the Lord wants to give you because your hands are full.

I love what Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,”

He is faithful so confidently seek Him first and let Him be enough in your life.
