take a minute tuesday

Today as we take a break from our normal posts, I encourage you to be still for just a few minutes and take some time to meet with God. God is all around us; we just have to take the time to experience Him. Psalm 46:10 encourages us to, “Be still and know that I am God.

When Trent and I got married I began doing the yard work. It’s not on Trent’s favorite things to do list and I rather enjoy it. I began pruning bushes and even trees. However, there was one tree in the back yard that Trent was very adamant that I didn’t touch – the shade tree in Hunter’s cage.

Now, I’m not a horticulturist but through trial and error over the years I’ve learned that bushes and trees need to be trimmed in order to grow. The tree in Hunter’s cage had dead branches on it and I knew they’d needed to be cut off because they were stealing food from the rest of the tree. I tried to persuade Trent that I wasn’t going to kill the tree by cutting the dead branches. It took a few years but he finally let me perform surgery – and oh how fun it was!

And, what do you know, a few years later the tree is still thriving and doing well. Don’t get me wrong, there are still more branches that need to be cut but I’m not pushing my luck just yet. I’m keeping my fingers crossed though because mowing around this tree is a pain (because the branches are so low) and it really has become a thorn in my side. I digress though.

Each time I mow around that tree I think about the “dead things” that God wants to cut out of my life. I don’t want to let go and cling to them because, in essence, I don’t think He knows what He’s doing. Just as I knew that trimming a few branches off of the tree in the back yard wasn’t going to kill it, God knows that cutting the “dead things” out of my life aren’t going to hurt me. Instead,  I’m going to thrive and grow as a result of this cutting away. I simply have to let Him take control.

Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my favorite verses, ” ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ “

What “dead things” does God want to cut from your life but you continue to cling to?
