Did you watch the Olympics over the last few weeks? I found myself turning the tv on at every free opportunity. Watching USA win all of those medals was exciting, but the thing I liked most about the Olympics was seeing the stories of the athletes! They are everyday people just like you and me, and many of them have had to conquer some difficult times in their life.
There are so many different athletes that I could talk about but the one that stands out the most to me is Oscar Pistorius. Oscar is a double-amputee that ran in the 400 meter. Each time I saw him run I was just in awe. All I could say was “WOW, that’s amazing!” Oscar is such an inspiration to people all around the world, not only to those that are amputees but to people like you and me that face struggles every day.
You see, Oscar didn’t let his disability get him down. Instead of sitting in a corner and crying (although I’m sure he did that too), he didn’t let that stop him. He didn’t give up and look where it got him, to the Olympics where he raced against “able bodied” men. What an accomplishment!
Just imagine what you and I could conquer if we put on our “big girl britches” and faced our “disabilities” head-on. Sure, there’s a time to sit in the corner and cry (Ecclesiastes 3:4), but God doesn’t want us to stay there!
I’ll leave us with this photo of Oscar racing and a question for us to ask ourselves – what “disability” am I facing that I need to fight through?
