Stepping Out On The LimbThis post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for more details.
Last year at this time I was swirling with the news of my surprise pregnancy. There were so many different emotions going through my head, but fear was definitely at the top of the list. I knew that the Lord had called me to this monumental task of motherhood, but I just didn’t understand why (and probably never will).
As children our parents told us we couldn’t do certain things or gave us certain tasks that, many times, we didn’t understand. I don’t know about you but I often questioned why. (Yes, I was that kind of child!)
In much the same way, our Heavenly Father takes us through journeys on this road of life that we don’t understand. And, as long as our heart is in the right place, I think He’s okay when we question why. We must remember that He sees the big picture, has our best interest at heart and is always right there with us. And, just as my “motherhood verse” (Isaiah 41:13) constantly reminds me, He’ll even hold our hand if we’ll allow Him!
I love this quote from Dear Jesus by Sarah Young:
“As fearfulness loosens its grip on you, you are freed to follow Me. Grasp My hand tightly, as we edge our way out onto the limb. Since I go before you in this venture, you can keep your eyes on Me as you step out in faith. Soon we will get to a resting place, and then you can look around. If you like, glance back at the tree trunk: the place from which we branched out on this adventure. While gripping My hand to steady yourself, look toward the horizon; enjoy the view from this treetop perspective.
You are actually safer here – out on this limb with me – than you would be on the ground. In this new, challenging environment you stay alert: communicating with Me continually, holding My hand in trusting dependence. Overly familiar surroundings may feel safer, but they can lull you into sleepy self-reliance. That is when you tend to forget about Me; it’s also when you are most likely to fall. Follow Me confidently wherever I lead, and the shelter of My presence will keep you safe.”
It’s taken me almost a year but I finally feel like I’m at a place where I can “glance back at the tree trunk.” This has been a frightening path but as I look back over the past year there is no doubt that the Lord has walked with me every step of the way.
When I didn’t think I could get through another moment, I would call out to Him and picture myself grabbing His hand. And as crazy as it might sound to some of you, a calm would come over me because I knew He was right there helping me through situation after situation (and still is).
Walking down this frightening path has definitely given me a fresh zeal to rely more on the Lord!
If you feel like you’re out on a limb it’s okay to be afraid. But just remember that He’s right there with you. He’s waiting for you to call out to Him, to take hold of His hand and let Him lead the way!
