To celebrate, I thought it might be fun to share a bit of the story of how we met and started dating!
The first time I ever saw Trent we were at a single’s lunch at the church we attended at the time. Honestly, my first thought when I saw him was, “Ah, he’s the oldest guy here.” (Sorry, but it’s true! After all, he is eight years older than I am.) I’m sure I was introduced to him but I don’t remember talking to him that day. Obviously it wasn’t love at first site for either of us.
At that same lunch (which is the first time I’d met the singles at this particular church), I was invited to a Bible study that one of the girls was having at her house. I was nervous about attending, particularly because I didn’t really want to let anyone in after having been hurt in my first marriage (read a bit of my story here). However, I attended because I knew that God was pushing me to find some friends my age.
After that first night I started attended regularly (and even attended the singles group on Sundays). Each week when the Bible study was over the group would stay and chat. Well, I didn’t want to talk about myself, especially in front of the group, so I would quietly leave after visiting for a few minutes.
Well, one week Trent followed me out to my car. We started chatting and he asked me if I would like to go to dinner with him. Even though he was a nice guy that was easy to talk to, I was scared at the thought of going on a date with him (actually, with anyone). I politely declined his invitation after remembering that I had a wedding to attend that weekend. (I’m sure he thought I was making excuses but I really did have plans.) He asked if he could call me and I gave him my number.
We chatted on the phone over the next few weeks and began to get to know each other better. He really was a nice guy, and my original opinion of him being an older guy quickly faded.
Our singles group was having a Memorial Day cookout. During the cookout I watched Trent interact with the group and I believe that’s when God began softening my heart towards him. After the cookout, Trent approached me again and asked if I’d go to dinner with him the next night. I said yes and agreed to meet him at the restaurant. And even though he was late for our very first date, the rest is history. We were married the next year!
God used Trent to break down the walls that I had built up around my heart. When that happened, I had no doubt that he was the one for me!
Happy anniversary sweetheart! I love you and am so thankful for you!
