is comparison stealing your joy

Whether we’re at the beach or simply walking down the street it’s so hard not to compare ourselves to others. Why is it that we let comparison steal our joy?

As I sat on the beach in Destin a few weeks ago I asked myself this very question and began to ponder this thought. (To be perfectly honest, an attractive lady passed by and I immediately compared myself to her.) It was at that moment that a verse popped into my thoughts. It was II Corinthians 10:5, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

At that moment I had to stop and take my thought captive. I reminded myself that even though the world may not see me as fit or attractive as the passerby but that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with me. Whether or not I have the world’s approval, Christ loves me just the way He created me. Psalm 139:13-14, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.

Yesterday my friend shared on her blog about how her daughter is bullied at school. My heart broke as I read how she is treated. Ladies, if we can’t begin to love ourselves, how are we going to train up the next generation to love themselves. We make fun of others because we are self-conscious (and, yes, I’m preaching to myself here). And, without even realizing it, our children turn into us…sometimes that’s good and sometimes that’s not so good. Are we mirroring the image of Christ?

Perhaps you don’t physically compare yourself to others. Maybe you comparing your “stuff” to others. You always have to have the latest and greatest fashions or toys. Why can’t we be content with all that you’ve been given?

We need to begin to see ourselves as children of the King and warrior princesses (or princes) who can fight against the attacks of Satan. Because, yes, it’s Satan that tells us that we’re not good enough or that we need to compare ourselves to others. So, let’s choose to take every though captive and make it obedient to what Christ says about us. Let’s choose to not let comparison steal our joy! Are you with me?
