If you’re like me, when cold and flu season rolls around you want to put your family in a bubble and protect everyone from all of the germs floating around. Unfortunately we can’t do that so I want to show you how to stay healthy during cold and flu season…yes, it is possible!

How To Stay Healthy During Cold and Flu Season
Following these tips and tricks doesn’t mean that my family doesn’t get sick, but they do help us have a better immune system and to be healthier and stronger.
1. Cut Out Sugar
Your mom always said, “Sugar feeds a cold.” She was right, my friend. Sugar breaks down your immune system. It is hard for your body to digest and it is so unhealthy. Sugar also feeds cancer cells.
Have you ever noticed that kids start getting sick right after Halloween? It’s when they get all that sugar in their system. Yes, I know it’s other things along with all of that sugar, but I think the sugar from Halloween is a jumping off point.
I want you to try to cut out sugar. I’m not saying to go cold turkey and cut out all the sugar from your diet because that’s not possible or realistic. We all have sugar in our diet but try to cut back as much as you can.
2. Protect Your Belly
I’m learning as I do health research that gut health is so important to the rest of the health of our body. When we keep our belly healthy it’s going to be healthier for our brain and the rest of our body.
I want you to consider taking a probiotic. They are excellent for gut health.
Gut health is super important to your overall health. So consider taking steps to better gut health. You can do more than just probiotics but they’re just a starting point if your’e looking for one.

3. Hydrate with Water
Drinking lots of water helps flush out the toxins in your system. All that junk that’s collecting in your body can be flushed out with water.
A great way to add water to your diet is to add fruits and veggies. Did you know that fruits and veggies are 80% water? They’re so juicy from all the water that is in them.
4. Refuel with Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and veggies is a great way to make healthy choices for your family. I know it’s hard but sneak it in as best as possible. Here are a few great ways to sneak them into your diet:
- Spinach into spaghetti sauce (put the spinach in the blender with a little water)
- Cauliflower sauce instead of cream of soups
- Squash, zucchini and spinach in smoothies
- Elderberry Syrup
- Zucchini Bread
- Fruits and veggies in a capsules/chewable
There are a ton of ways to add fruits and veggies to your diet…you just need to get creative and think outside the box.
5. Oil Up
Have you ever tried using essential oils? We love using them. (And no I don’t sell them.)
One of the oils that we use especially during cold and flu season is for prevention…it’s called Onguard. Whenever I know that Dalton’s going to be around other children – at church, the babysitters, etc. – I roll some diluted Onguard onto the bottom of his feet. This gives his little immune system a boost to keep him healthy when he’s around germs.
If we feel like we’re starting to get sick I can roll the diluted Onguard onto our feet regularly, diffuse it for us or even put it in a capsule and take it internally.
My sister always says there’s an oil for that, and there really is. If you feel like you’re starting to get sick (no matter what it may be) there are a ton of different things you can try.
I want you to consider trying 1 or 2 oils. If you have an oils person ask them which ones they recommend. I promise that they’ll have tons of information to share with you.

6. Wash Hands
This may sound extremely simple but a lot of times we forget about washing our hands. With all the things that we touch we carry around a lot of germs. Whenever you get home from church or the grocery store immediately wash your hands.
I have a friend that has her kids go straight to the bathroom when they get home from school and wash their hands up to their elbows.
For little ones, in addition to washing their hands when they get home you can change their outfit when you leave places and put those clothes straight in the washer or dirty laundry.
This simple task is just another great way to keep the germs away and can make a huge difference in your family’s health.
7. Don’t Forget Your Mental Health
I don’t know about you but when the winter months roll around and the sun isn’t out as much my mood can tend to droop. Our mental health is so important to help us stay healthy.
I want you to consider taking Vitamin D on a regular basis. The majority of our Vitamin D comes from being around the sun so we need this additional resource (especially during the winter months) to give us a boost.
Another thing you can do for your mental health is to take omegas. They have made a huge difference for my mental health. If you haven’t already, check out this video where I share how much omegas have helped me.
