Dalton with birthday cake

The biggest thing that happened in October was Dalton turning 4. As you can imagine he was so excited about his cake, presents and all the festivities surrounding his big day.

My goal is to make it memorable for him. So, I let him pick what flavor of cake he wanted…he chose chocolate. And when we were at the grocery store he picked something special to eat for his birthday breakfast (Oikos Triple Zero yogurt) and another special treat (Watermelon Bai Water).

We’ve chosen not to do birthday parties until he’s older and can actually remember them. So while we didn’t have everyone together in a party type setting he spent time with his grandmas and my sister also took him to a pumpkin patch to celebrate his big day.

My Motherhood Right of Passage

Dalton sitting on his bed with legs crossed

The day before his birthday we moved Dalton out of his toddler bed and into a “big boy bed.” The smile on his face says it all.

While most moms would be sad to transition their kids to a bigger bed, sadness isn’t how I would describe my feelings…they were more feelings of thankfulness.

As odd as it sounds I felt like moving him to his bigger bed was my motherhood right of passage. It was just another sign of the Lord’s faithfulness and how he’s helped me through the baby years on this surprise motherhood journey.

It was a reminder that He’s going to continue to be with me in the years ahead, and when I’m fearful and feel like I’m floundering all over the place He’s going to take hold of my right hand and help me every step of the way. (Isaiah 41:13)

October Writing

If you missed them, check out the blog posts I shared this month!

elderberry syrup, elderberries, cinnamon sticks and clove

How To Make Your Own Elderberry Syrup – Making your own elderberry syrup is super easy. We take it as prevention for cold and flu season. Not only are elderberries a natural immune system booster but they can lower blood sugar, encourage healthy skin and are a natural diuretic and laxative.

Give Yourself Some Grace Momma {Video} – Motherhood is hard enough and the last thing we need to do is put extra pressure on ourselves. Follow along as I encourage us to extend a little bit of grace to ourselves.

How To Stay Healthy During Cold and Flu Season – Unfortunately we can’t put our family in a bubble when all of the nasty germs start floating around so I want to show you how to stay healthy during cold and flu season…yes, it is possible!

We Are The Champions

For the past few months we’ve been heading to the local middle schools on Tuesday nights to cheer on Jayden as he plays football. (He’s super proud to finally be taller than me.)

You wouldn’t think so but I’m the type of person to actually cheer for the team and it’s been funny to watch Dalton start cheering for them too. What a fun year to follow their team because they went all the way and won the championship!

Carving Our First Pumpkin

Tshanina and Dalton cleaning out pumpkin

Not only was this Dalton’s first time to carve a pumpkin but it was mine too. I racked my brain and couldn’t for the life of me ever remember carving a pumpkin in the past. Isn’t that sad?!

It was really a group effort because I cleaned out the inside of the pumpkin while Trent did the carving. What can I say, he’s more artistically inclined than I am. HA!

We had so much fun that I believe we’ll have to make this a yearly tradition!

And can I just say that it’s nearly impossible to take a family picture while trying to include a jack-o-lantern. :o)

October Reading

And the Shofar Blew by Francine Rivers – It took me a few chapters to really get into this book but once I got hooked on the storyline and the characters I didn’t want to put it down. In the end there were some great spiritual takeaways that really touched my heart.
Rating: ☆ ★ ★ ★ ★

Flawless by Scott Andrew Selby – I was super excited about this book. It’s been on my reading list forever so I decided to give it a go. Let’s just say that after two chapters I was done. Instead of every little detail about the city where the largest diamond heist in history took place I wanted details about the actual heist. Needless to say I was bummed about this read!
Rating: ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ★

Around the Way Girl by Taraji P. Henson – The lives of Hollywood actresses/actors intrigue me so when I saw this book forever ago I knew I wanted to check it out. I’ve seen Taraji with her roles in Hidden Figures and Person of Interest and loved her acting. Her book, however, left a lot to be desired. It felt scattered, had a lot of bad language and there were a few parts where I felt like she was using the book to share her views on issues.
Rating: ☆☆☆★★

If I Run by Terri Blackstock – This book had me hooked within the first few pages and I didn’t want to put it down. Casey is on the run for a murder she didn’t commit and Dylan is a private investigator who is tracking her. This was my first read by Terri Blackstock and I was super impressed. (It’s actually one of the books in my Must-Read Christian Fiction Book Series). It’s a fast read, very well written and if it tells you anything about how good it is, I’ve already put the next book in this series on hold.
