Are You Sowing Sparingly or Generously?

As I was reading my devotions this morning I ran across II Corinthians 9:6. It says, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”

It was definitely a verse that jumped out at me – I had to read it a second time. I even took a few minutes to contemplate whether Trent and I are sowing sparingly or generously.

I'm convinced that people who are good stewards with their money are given more to manage. That being said, are you sowing sparingly or generously?

Learning From Observing

One of my favorite pastimes while I’m out and about is to people watch. You can really learn a lot about someone just by watching their actions, especially when they don’t know you’re watching (and, no, I’m not a creeper). One thing I’ve observed through the years, not only by watching people but also by listening to their stories, is that generous people are typically wealthy.

Now, the fact that they’re wealthy doesn’t necessarily mean that they have millions in their portfolio (sometimes they do). But, I’m convinced that people who are good stewards with their money are given more to manage. Even if you took what the Bible says about being a good steward (Matthew 25:14-30) out of the equation, it’s very obvious. There are tons of generous people in this world who aren’t believers and they are great managers of what they’ve been given. They’ve sowed generously through the years and now they are reaping generously!

What About Me

Now you may be thinking, thanks for bringing up the fact that we need to be generous Tshanina. I don’t have a pot to pee in. How in the world can I be generous/a good steward?

If we were sitting across from each other talking, I would encourage you to take a look at your current situation. Do you have debts that you need to start cleaning up or do you need to cut back on certain luxuries in order to be a generous giver (Radical by David Platt is a great book about this very subject). And, yes, if you live in America you (we) have plenty of luxuries. A few that come to mind are cell phones, cable, shall I go on?

Only you know your current situation. Only you know what God is pressing on your heart to do. Whatever that is, I would encourage you to move. You won’t be able to experience the blessings of God in your life until you fully surrender to His calling. And you won’t be able to reap generously until you’ve sown generously.

So, I’ll ask you the question that I asked myself, are you sowing sparingly or generously?
